Prieš 36 metus, 1987 m. birželio 28 d., Vatikano Šv. Petro bazilikoje popiežius Jonas Paulius II paskelbė, kad nuo šiol į Jurgį Matulaitį dera kreiptis kaip į palaimintąjį.
Popiežius tada sakė:
“Kad jis sugebėjo nugalėti visokeriopus išmėginimus ir būti visų labai kilniai įvertintas, tai priklauso nuo jo ypatingu būdu praktikuotų dorybių. Tai patvirtina gausūs liudijimai iš įvairių sričių, kuriose reiškėsi gausių vaisių davusi jo kaip ganytojo veikla: nuo uolaus kunigiško apaštalavimo iki svarbių Šventojo Sosto jam patikėtų pareigų; nuo akademinio dėstymo iki praktinio kultūros bei socialinio teisingumo reikalavimų puoselėjimo, taip pat nuolatinių asmeninių įsipareigojimų vargdienių ir beturčių naudai. Ypač noriu priminti jo rūpinimąsi vienuoliniu gyvenimu. Jis tai parodė, atnaujindamas Kunigų Marijonų kongregaciją, įsteigdamas Švč. Mergelės Marijos Nekaltojo Prasidėjimo vargdienių seserų ir Eucharistinio Jėzaus Tarnaičių vienuolijas. Čia gausiai dalyvaujantys jo dvasios sūnūs ir dukterys iš jo yra gavę brangų šventumo bei atsidėjimo Bažnyčios ir brolių tarnystei paveldą. Visi šie padariniai kilo iš gilaus vidinio gyvenimo, kuris palaikė nuolatinę jo vienybę su Dievu.
Palaimintasis Jurgis Matulaitis labiausiai yra šviesus pavyzdys vyskupo, tapusio „visiems viskuo“, giliai įsisąmoninusio savąjį ganytojo pašaukimą, visiškai atsidavusio Evangelijos skelbimui ir pastangoms vesti sielas į šventumą”.
Liepos mėnesį vyks šio Vilniaus arkivyskupo Palaimintojo Jurgio Matulaičio atlaidai Marijampolėje.
EN| Thirty-six years ago, on June 28, 1987, at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Pope St. John Paul II raised Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis (George Matulaitis-Matulewicz), to the honors of the altar.
The Pope then said:
“That he was able to overcome all kinds of trials and to be appreciated by all in a very noble way is due to the virtues he practised in a special way. This is borne out by the abundant testimony of the many areas in which his pastoral activity bore much fruit: from his zealous priestly apostolate to the important duties entrusted to him by the Holy See; from academic teaching to the practical promotion of the demands of culture and of social justice, and from his constant personal commitment for the poor and the needy. I wish to recall in particular his concern for monastic life. He demonstrated this by renewing the Congregation of Marian Fathers, by founding the Congregation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, by founding the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, by founding the Congregation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He also restored the Congregation of the Marians, the Congregation of the Poor Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Congregation of the Handmaids of the Eucharistic Jesus. Here, the sons and daughters of his spirit, who are present in great numbers, have received from him a precious heritage of holiness and devotion to the service of the Church and the brothers. All these effects came from a profound interior life which sustained his constant union with God.
Blessed George Matulaitis is above all a shining example of a bishop who became “all things to all men”, who was deeply aware of his pastoral vocation, who was totally committed to the proclamation of the Gospel and to the effort to lead souls to holiness”.
